So my conclusion was that 1) FBSD is minimally slower than linux for hlds use and 2) IO operations had a very small but noticeable impact on hlds performance.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to debate specific FreeBSD vs Linux performance. But I do know when the 2.4.xx kernel was out there was an insane idea that one could run a 32 player CS server full, only using 5% CPU. It became a huge discussion on this list. In the end is was agreed on by most that top was broke in that kernel version (I can't remember I think it was 2.4.20 or something). But many people started looking into the issue and CPU loads don't seem to be consistently reported in Linux across different distros and kernel versions. So all I am saying is when I hear someone say that FreeBSD is 10-15% slower running HLDS, in my mind it's entirely possible their Linux box is reporting 10-15% lower than actual CPU load.
