Remember, open source in that aspect is a dual edged sword. Yes, those that are in the know have the ability to correct coding errors, however, this also in turn allows those that are "more" in the know, to be able to locate other disasterous problems and exploit them as well.
There's also more opportunity for personal pride in open source, because programmers' names are right there in the code. Who knows who the author of Clippy is? Probably best that he remains anonymous.
When an exploit does turn up, there's cachet in being the first to come up with a patch, even if you're not the author of the original code. I think this is what Jurgen was alluding to.
