If personal pride was a deciding factor no wonder Microsoft's programmers kept their work closed source =)
Having a billion patches that do the same thing in different ways would be more confusing for the average user then an official patch that auto-downloads tho =D

When an exploit does turn up, there's cachet in being the first to come up with a patch, even if you're not the author of the original code. I think this is what Jurgen was alluding to.
