You can connect directly to your server if a spot is open - that's what I'm doing right now... . One of my three forks had a spot open, so I connected directly to the server and then was able to make room on it for others I wanted to play with to join me -- they joined, we're on a box... very manual process, but it did work.
As far as the lobby connect that's interesting, but I don't think that would help..
