I think Valve should host maps, it's time. For other, more community based games like CS and TF2 it works pretty well the way it is, but L4D is different and there are few quality custom maps anyway but they tend to be big. Many games works like that, one example is Far Cry 2 (terrible game), all custom maps could be uploaded and when someone joined they were downloaded from Ubisofts servers, worked great and it could allow console players to enjoy custom maps as well.
I'm not saying they should add a few maps officially like they do in TF2, just host any decent quality custom maps released on fast steam servers.
