So not so nice guys can still set the steamgroup to their group & the
official left 4 dead Group id? I stick around in official groups for
announcements, but if i get a list of 400 servers it wont be fun to be in
one.. (since i just want to see my community's servers) dont know if this is
still the case though.

That is correct.  Note that the list of servers you can select from will
only be servers in your Steam groups that are currently empty and can accept
your lobby.

Server operators may wish to revisit setting the Steam group for their
dedicated servers.  This can be done by adding "sv_steamgroup <id>" to the
server.cfg file where <id> is the Steam group's id number that is viewable
on the administration page for the group in the Steam Community.  Server
operators can set their server to be in multiple Steam groups by separating
the id for each group by a comma.

When you select Steam Group Server, it lets you choose any server that 
belongs to a Steam Group that you are a part of.
