If you think about it a bit, only difference is that you connect to particular server after search alone and not with 3 friends together. The servers location, what map it runs or should run is measured and thus used. Matchmaking as a word is not the best selection but it comes from matching players with servers (l5d's, tf2) or players with same level of skill players (cs:go)
