I doubt a responsible orthodontist or dentist would recommend removable orthodontia to kids. One of the biggest advantages to traditional braces over Invisalign is that you can't forget to put braces in and you can't take them out. Invisalign might be quite profitable for general dentists who had been shut out of the orthodontia market, which may color any recommendation they have to use them for kids.
Both my kids went through braces -- one plays trumpet and no longer has them, the other plays horn and still has hers. The general rule of thumb we followed for a couple weeks after they were put on was to play just a little bit at a time and to avoid doing anything that hurt. They were cool with that, and within a few weeks pretty much back to normal.
