Jim,
Don't expect the lacquer on your Atkinson or any other horn to be as durable as 
the finish on your 8-D.  I have an 8-D from 1968 that still looks like brand 
new.  Also, refinishing a horn is rarely as durable as the original finish.  I 
wonder if one could put a clear coat on a bell, like one finds on an automobile?
