Once there's any wear of the lacquer, there is danger (certainty in my case) of
pitting--brass pox. Strip it, especially the inside of the bell. Tarnished is
better than pitted. I protect the inside of the bell where my hand goes by
clear
fingernail polish, which is easy to remove and reapply. I suppose you could be
artistic and use colored nail polish.

Subject: [Hornlist] Lacquer Issues

Almost four years ago, I purchased an NR501 Atkinson double horn. I love
the horn and the way it plays, much easier than my old 8D, but I'm
wondering if it's my perspiration or something else that is causing the
lacquer on the rose brass parts to come off. It is especially noticeable
on the inside of the bell where, of course, my hand goes. While this
does not affect my playing, I sometimes long for a "pretty" horn. I know
I could just strip off all the lacquer or I could send it in and get a
re-lacquer done. I'm just curious if it's just me or if anyone else has
had this issue?
