Steve, this is a fantastic project. Thanks for the info. We have similar projects provided by several famous libraries in Germany & Austria, mostly concentrated about the most valuable books & documents of the middle ages & before. The reason is the same as in New York: proper preservation of the originals & availability for the public.
But this availability to the public does not include the right, to publish these contents within other programs. That is the point. Why should it be allowed for unlimited use ??? Just to support people of lazy brain ? If doing research one has to use the brain, but not to support ones criminal energy. Research means thinking about things, finding out about the things, but not just copy & copy & copy. It also means a lot of reading & understanding.
