If one has acquired the skill to play Bb-horn & F-horn properly or even use
both sides equally, switching the brain & fingers to automatic, it is not any
problem at all, playing E-horn-passages. It just requires a bit slower
approach to the Bb-side, if you have started on the F-horn. Speed will
return quickly.

But if you have started with Bb-horn, things can become difficult because
the brain is too strongly formatted to Bb by then, perhaps.

By the time I started playing mixed horn (back & forth between F & Bb) in
a certain semi-conscious manner, you might name it semi-automatic also,
my fingers selected things. I started playing, transforming read black dots
distributed within a 5-lines-system on more or less white paper directly to
acoustical sensations, which are called musical sounds, without employing
my brain much. It works well still now for the retired pro. This system freed me
of technical problems & left more room for tone coloring, expression, etc.

Well, admitted, other things don´t work that good any more. But I do not have
to participate on any competition any more. That´s the good thing for me.
