There are many examples of modern composers who really understand the instrument specifying fingerings. Ricardo mentions Bb/1-2 or F/1-2, explicitly identifying which side of the horn is to be used, by Esa-Pekka Salonen in his Concert Etude. Another possibility is to treat the thumb as just another valve and indicate it with a 4, although that again is dependent on how the horn lies.
