I haven't followed all of this thread - apologies if I'm repeating what someone else said already.
I've used a Sabine tuner (model is 3000) on a French Horn, clamping it near where the lead pipe meets the rest of the horn - works fine. I've had lengthy conversations elsewhere about strobe tuners and their accuracy - they are much more accurate than one needs. A tuner that can tell the difference between A=440 and A=439 is probably enough for most people, and that's about a 4-cent difference. I don't understand the need for tuners that are accurate to 1/10th cent, as I believe some Peterson strobes are. The nice thing about any tuner with a piezo transducer (like the Sabine) is that it doesn't rely on a microphone, which means you can use it even in, e.g., the middle of a rehearsal - it will only pick up your sound because it's working on vibrations felt through the clamp and not sound to a microphone. -S- On Wed, Aug 3, 2011 at 1:38 PM, Robert N.
