I would recommend a Holton 378 or 179 or a Conn 6D.
I wouldn't recommend buying a Conn 8D (or Holton 188) if the horn is going to
stay in the high school and be played by intermediate players. The large
throat on the 8D is difficult for intermediate level players to fill up or
control.
I've personally had a lot of trouble with tuning sections of 6Ds, but never
with sections of Holton 179s.
Ironically, I'd recommend just the opposite for a private student purchasing
a horn; get an 8D now and learn to fill it up.
