I haven't purchased horns for younger-than-college students, but I did give
a workshop to HS teachers once at an MENC conference. (So...I'm qualified??)
Anyway, a few ideas follow:

First off, among the 60 or so teachers I addressed, most had to stretch
their dollars. Most routinely forsake buying doubles because you can buy 2
singles for close to the same resources. As for makes, I would go for
something like the Yamaha student models (can't remember the model #
offhand). I tried the whole line of Yamahas and noted that the student model
was remarkably good. Then the horns were just ok until you get to the
top-of-the-line models. But the main reason I recommend the student models
is that they are a little more rugged, with stronger braces and whatnot. The
cost savings is important if one can buy more horns for the same money.

This is important. Finally, I would stay away from 8Ds for students because
8Ds, frankly, can take a little more work to play in tune, depending on the
individual horn. 8Ds are superb horns, and maybe they would be overkill in a
school context.
