I have to put in my thoughts on recital playing. I did my first two years of college at a community college, and at the end of my first year auditioned for the college music award. I ended up in the "consolation" recital held at the school rather than in town, and I tanked so bad I entertained thoughts of quitting the horn. (Mozart No. 1 really shouldn't have sounded like I made it sound.) In April of my second year I performed the only full solo recital anyone had done at the school in years. I did Mozart, Hindemith, - one movement from each - Purcell, and a few other trinkets. Oh yeah, "auf dem strom" with a tenor, and the balcony aria from "Don Giovanni' with mandolin. Fun stuff, and although I did more than my share of just bad playing, I made it through and on the whole was successful. My point is simply that I think we all have our historically "bad" moments in public playing, but if we have the right teachers and colleagues it can be a dramatic learning experience a nd motivator. I still almost cry when I hear some of my playing, and I just about stand up, pound my chest and give a Tarzan yell when I hear other recordings of me. To laugh at someone who is obviously out of his element is hurtful, and despite the fact that we have all done it, I believe that if my first recital recording was used as public comic entertainment I would be livid at whoever used it that way. paxmaha
