I also generally quickly put a landuse=residential area on top of any
settlements that I am merging if I have good clear imagery to outline it.

You should only add a landuse=residential if you're fairly sure that the
entire area is residential. You might want to add the area of the
settlement as place=* instead, and not use a node.

I should say, I totally understand what you are saying and will keep it in mind for any of the outlining I do going forward on the GNS or any other mapping I do, thank you for the advice.

I have seen a few area's with place= tags and I am still not sure of the pros and cons of placing using a single node v. using an area.

In a lot of the cases of this GNS mapping there is no visible settlement of any sort, just dense trees, but we still have to place a node someplace, so in that case it makes sense to use a node, there is nothing to outline.

But in other mapping, not this importing thing, I would not know when to put a place tag on an area v. putting in a node to put place, name on it.
