Charlotte,

Crowdmapping, especially for major activations like the current Ebola
Outbreak, this mean a lot of new contributors, with mapping problems and
need to support them. And we see a lot of turnover. When we say that
1,000 contributors have mapped. In fact, for many of them, this is less
then 100 objects. How to retain these people, make them like to
contribute and learn rapidly. To do so, I prefer a social approach where
it is easy for these persons to communicate and ask questions. The same
with the coordinators, have the capacity to join rapidly the
contributors to the various tasks.

Hi Pierre,

I think lack of feedback is a contributing factor in people drifting away. I agree with you 100% we need to engage people as soon as possible once they start.

If we are going to rely on people doing more to join and engage with the HOT community, we are going to have to do more to make sure they know how.

For example: I'd like to see text on every Project at the bottom that says something like "Live help, ask questions, get feedback...." with a link to the web browser irc client.

People are getting more and more familiar with "live help chat" type things and I'd like to see more new people asking questions in the irc channel.

But back to this topic, we are seeing more people saying they want more feedback than they are getting now, especially it seems the people on the ground who brought this topic up up. And for some reason they are not finding the irc channel or the HOT mailing list so I would like to try some more ways to help them get feedback.

I still think the basic suggestion of optional email of comments for tasks that someone closes when it is validated is a very good and small step in that direction, and it is a direct response to mapper's request for such functions.

I also do not see it as an either/or suggestion with what you say about increasing engagement, in fact, if they opt into getting comments on validation, that is another opportunity to make sure they know about the other ways to get feedback at the bottom of the emails we send out.

Cheers,
Blake
