IMO, IRC can be used for quick requests and quick help. It's a lot easier to offer help over a chat channel than over some messaging system that requires a page refresh in order to get the messages.
Just including a link to here https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.oftc.net/hot with some explanation could be enough (users only have to chose a nickname and click "Start"). A more integrated solution would be to embed the chat client in the tasking manager (see https://kiwiirc.com/embedding). If the channel becomes too crowded, it can always be split into multiple channels (f.e. per task). For longer-term help. I think the querying system I proposed earlier would be good enough. With some default queries (i.e. show all tiles you closed), it would be able to show a lot of conversations at once.
