These were originally non-standard security options for mail servers, meaning authentication info was passed in plain text, but Google smartly got the ball rolling by mandating encrypted authentication. It's becoming the standard (as it should be), but meanwhile some older mail clients (and ColdFusion) don't support the added complexity.
