Mike,Even if you are not familiar with Java, you can make use of the fact
that ColdFusion runs on Java.
This is a page showing examples of how to create Java objects and how to use
them from ColdFusion, along with a quick example of how to open a socket in
Java.

And after finding that article, I found this one that actually shows how to
use the underlying Java directly in ColdFusion to create sockets.  This
looks to be exactly what you are looking for, so you should probably attempt
this before my first suggestion.
