With the Design Jets, the printer is always trying to ensure that the finished print is lying square to the side edges and the leading edge. I print a lot of canvas from the rear loading slot, (never the front, because it kinks at the 180 degree turn) and I use a Logan matte cutter to get the edges straight and at 90 degrees.
I've found this to be crucial to get my 40+ inch canvas to feed and print squarely. If I fail to get the canvas to feed, I know the printer is preventing me from getting a badly crooked print. The next crucial step is the initial feed. At the left of the rear slot there is a small moulded line in the plastic - this is the left-hand guide. The technique is to push the media in quickly so it reaches the roller assembly inside the machine squarely. If you are tentative or slow, the rollers start to grab it before it is square across them and you have a bad load. After about two months of ownership, I can get it right about nine out of ten occasions. I cut 22" wide lengths from 44" rolls, then I fold under 2" on each side, to give an 18" width print. I find if I use 16mil canvas that it feeds and prints with no trouble at all, even though the canvas is now 32mil thick along the 2" wide edges. When the printing is done, I unfold the edges and have an 18" wide print with 2"+ all round to allow for stretching on wooden stretchers, giving a finished 18" x 40"+ object from an 18" DJ 90.
