As a DJ 130 user for a couple of years, I thought I would share my first impression with a Z3100 that Santa brought a little early his year...
The most amusing aspect of its arrival has been my wife's reaction to the printer design (which is very sleek and contemporary). At first she thought it is was a replica of the futuristic coffin in which Spock was "buried" in space. After seeing the print head spectrophotometer glow red as it moved back and forth to read the calibration patches during startup, she now thinks it may be a cylon device (Battlestar Galalctica fans only). Unlike the Dj130, for which the setup manual was a textless series of photo-like renderings, which you either understood or were very frustrated by, the Z setup is fantastic and so well thought out it is hard to believe they are from the same manufacturer. Kudos to those responsible. Likewise for the software installation, at least on the Mac. It ran perfectly, recognized the Z straightaway, and did the full color spectrum calibration as advertised, with such simplicity that you can't believe sophisticated printer color management could be this simple. And I must say, to all of us that bought the 130 and not the 130nr, boy is it sweet to have the built in auto roll feed. Exact alignment when rear feeding from the roll and built in paper cutter from the get go. Yahoo. Changing roll media will no longer be a dreaded undertaking. Today I will make my first series of test prints. More to follow...
