I'm suddenly having issues with the printing of shadow detail. It
started when I tried to build a custom profile for a new paper. I
was wasting many sheets of paper trying the get the PDI test image to
print "right." Everything that is a midtone or a highlight seems to
be fine, but as soon as the colors starting moving toward shadow, all
kinds of crazy happens. The shadows look almost posterized.

I thought that maybe I had a setting wrong in PS CS2 or messed up in
scanning the calibration target. After agonizing over it for a while,
I grabbed an older print of the calibration target. The target (from
Colorvision ProfilerPlus) is a square with 3x3 blocks of color that
are each broken down into smaller blocks 9x9. I noticed that on all
the new prints the column of small blocks in the darker/shadow area of
each larger block stood out. These columns look lighter because they
have a lot more yellow in them that my older "correct" print shows.
I'm not sure why this is happening. I even printed the target from MS
Painter to make sure it wasn't a Photoshop problem. I got the same
results.

I probably did a lousy job explaining the problem so if you have any
questions please email me or reply here. Any help would be MUCH
appreciated. I'm one frustrated puppy right now.
