My take on all this is that HP are abandoning the small one/two man enterprise, where the 17/18" range fits. The 9180 suits the enthusiastic amateur, and then there's this growing range of uber expensive monsters.
In my business, which is producing canvas printed art (our own photo-art and digital paintings} the Design Jet 90 is a well priced workhorse that only needs a pigment equivalent to be the ideal small business art printer. Not to be, it seems. In this market, color management beyond the basic level is just not needed, although it would be needed if we branched out into doing other artist's work. With a bit of hardware and RIP expense, the old DJ90 could easily handle that, and an 18" pigment equivalent would be a perfect fit. (I've toyed with the idea of using MIS re-fillables and changing to their pigment inks.
