I think it depends on what you make your prints for. If you are in the RGB world, maybe you dont need a RIP, just a good ICC profile. If you are in the prepress proofing world, do yourself a favor and get a RIP. For a long time Neil Snape, Carl, and a couple other guys here worked on resolving some color traces. THey were very good, in fact, so good that I worked with them for some time, then the magazines wanted to see color bars, etc, and I wanted to be a bit more professional about it with contract proofing paper and such, so I got the RIP, and very happy with the purchase.
