Black and white with DJ's is problematic, for the following reasons: 1. The black ink is not neutral, more of a chocolate, so printing with "grey" only doesn't work well. 2. The HP printer driver uses a lot of CMY inks along with K in order to maintain an overall large color gamut. However, the color inks are fairly metameric, and therefore the neutrals don't "travel" well from one illuminant to another; images will appear neutral under one lighting source but take on a color cast with another. IMO, HP uses way too much yellow ink in their "recipe", which exacerbates the problem. 3. I use the ImagePrint RIP with my DJ90, and it has a black and white mode whereby it mixes in a limited amount of CMY (probably no Y) to offset the slight color of the black ink. It certainly works better than full color, but prints will show a cyan cast under certain lighting. The best solution I've come up with is to create custom profiles thru the ImagePrint RIP in CMYK mode, so that I can control the inks precisely for a given paper. I was able to achieve neutrality this way, but unfortunately the dither pattern ImagePrint uses in CMYK appears to be coarser than with RGB, so that the resulting B&W prints are slightly grainy. IMO without a RIP there's no way to print satisfactory B&W, unless you can completely control the viewing conditions and are willing to experiment with the multiple B&W HP profiles.
