David, First, what paper did you print on? Apparently you have to use some kind of swellable polymer paper to get the best longevity. Second, how did you have the work displayed - out in the open, framed (keeps the contaminants down and provides a little UV protection), framed with museum glass or polycarbonate to stop UV, or...? While these prints do seem to do better than a C41 processed color print, they aren't pigment based and will fade under heavy UV light eventually.
On the DJ130 and vivera ink, it sounds like you got the Indian trainee HP rep - the DJ130 has always used vivera inks - hp even says so: http://h41186.www4.hp.com/country/us/en/forums/tree_display.html?forum_id=993&posting_id=80435 the posting also points out that there are both dye and pigment based vivera inks, and they are not interchangable... I'm not sure there is much of anything that is REALLY lightfast given the right conditions, but pigment based systems apparently are more lightfast in general - you can go to the wilhelm site and do some digging: http://www.wilhelm-research.com/ I think everybody can find something to nitpick about his testing methodology, but at least he's sort of consistent so you can look at his numbers for relative fade resistance... As far as coatings go, I haven't tried it on any DJ130 outputs yet, but I've had good luck in the past with Golden Archival Varnish on other dye based prints. I'm sure there are a number of other treatments out there as well these days, and I think Wilhelm does some testing of these various coatings as well... I'm not sure what to suggest you tell your customers - I normally point out that the print is more resistant to UV than a color print, but flat out tell them that the print probably needs UV protection in high light situations - just like a large color photograph would.... If you can't get around that as a selling point, it might be best to consider some kind of pigment based system, though even then you have to wonder about the logevity in similar situations (since lotsa direct sunlight is way above wilhelm's testing situation..).
