Ralf, 

I have the same symptoms, and I suspect your problem is caused by 
a disagreement over the meaning of sane_cancel (see my other post). 

The following one-line patch to xsane-0.991 solved the problem for
me, even though it is just a workaround which violates the sane 
API spec.
