Aaron,

I managed to install hplip-1.6.9. Same problem with the scanner,
but the fax now works :)

I tried scanimage from the tarball, problem did not go away. 
I am not sure what else I can do to help you reproduce it. 

Could you try xsane with the batch-scan option? 
This is a useful check, since no official version of xsane 
does sane_cancel after a page from the ADF. If xsane works for
you, we know the problem does not occur on your hardware.
