I do apologize because I post again on the same subject, having asked help more than one year ago. On a Mandriva 2006, I was not able to scan. The solution was to install hplip. Now I installed a new Mandriva 2007, and, as I normally prefer, I did not upgrade but I installed from scratch. Hplip was installed by default, version 1.6.9. Great printing, no scanning. Xsane could not find it. I checked the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and uncommented the line containing hpaio. No success. The error message I get from hp-toolbox is (translating from Italian, so the wording won't be perfect):
It is not possible to open hpaio:/usb/OfficeJet_5110?serial=CN3ANB107X2Q Operation not permitted. Running xsane directly (user or root) the anser is "No scanner found". sane-find-scanner : "No USB scanners found." No difference if I log as root. scanimage -L outputs "No scanners were identified." I also tried to specify the URI as suggested in the "troubleshooting" page at hplip.sourceforge.net, but the answer is the same as from hp-toolbox (operation not permitted).
