Solved. I post here two observation in the hope to be useful to others

(1) The problem was simple. I had installed hplip from the Mandriva DVD
(Powerpack, i.s. the commercial version) and I assumed that the
installation
was all right. Wrong! The file libsane-hpaio.so.1 had not been installed.
Found the RPM (which *was* in the DVD!), installed it, all right now. An
inaccuracy in the Mandriva installation of hplip, I think. Do you think it

worth submitting to the Mandriva folks? I don't do so as a private
customer -- they don't care too much, I'm afraid from recent experience.
Reporting this to Mandriva is a good idea. The only way they will know there
is an issue.
(2) A minot issue. In the troubleshooting page it is celarly stated to type
$ export SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128
$ scanimage -L
Ok, but the HTLM code is:
<p>$ export SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128
$ scanimage -L</p>
and in some browsers (as Firefox, in my case) the output is one line and
not
two. In Konqueror two lines are shown. May I suggest to add a "<br>"?
We will take a look at fixing this issue. Thanks for the feedback.
