As I told, my customer has an laserjet 2300 and I have a laserjet 2200 myself. They are a lot the same, my laserjet 2200 is not supported by hplip too. On my laserjet 2200 printing is no problem with HPlip and a paralel cable. For this reason I think the problem with HPlip on my customers machine is not only related to USB. Details: I added the printer with my laserjet 2200 and a paralel cable, using the Cups defaults, URI and printerdriver: hp:/par/HP_LaserJet_2200?device=/dev/parport0 HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/hpijs - HPLIP 1.6.10 First I saw an error in Cups "printmode mismatch with pen, tray, etc." but then it printed OK. I've also tried the laserjet 2300 driver on my laserjet 2200. Same result as with the laserjet 2200 driver. >> Device: uri = usb://HP/LaserJet%202300%20series >> class = direct >> info = hp LaserJet 2300 series USB #1 >> make-and-model = hp LaserJet 2300 series > > Did you try out this DeviceURI? Yes I did. This works fine. So I think hplip is the problem, and not USB. > Perhaps only the "hp" backend fails via USB but the generic > CUPS "usb" backend works? When I choose the device, I see for the paralel port: LPT #1 For USB I see: HP laserjet 2300 series USB #1 (HP laserjet 2300 series) So USB has more autodetection. > By the way: > Perhaps it is a general problem in CUPS 1.2 that its > parallel backend fails to autodetect the device, see > https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264771#c12 > starting at comment #12 up to comment #18. > > >> I did use what CUPS presented me. I tested this with a laserjet 2200, and on anather computer it does work on the paralel port. >> This does work: >> parallel:/dev/lp0 > > What I try to point out is that this should even work when you > select a PPD file which uses the hpijs driver, e.g. something > like "HP LaserJet 2300 Foomatic/hpijs". Correct, this works without error. So it's not the hpijs driver. > Of course, as you wrote, the traditional Ghostscript driver "ljet4" > for PCL5e printers also works ("HP LaserJet 2300 Foomatic/ljet4").
