I don't understand what you mean with "plain printing". I did my tests
with the CUPS testpage, this is not just a simple text.

It's confusing. If you want to know it for sure, I can do a test with my
laserjet 2200 here. I expect it works with HPlip. I need to search for a
paralel cable, not sure if I have another one.

I prefer the USB port, and I am interested in what is wrong.
But this is what I do now for this customer.

That's possible. I am using the laserjet4 driver.
