Of course you're right. One of the best properties of the hsqldb is
that it can be run In-process or as an addition to the web application
(just put ~600kB jar in WEB-INF/lib directory and all is set!)

That said, now I understand most of the implications of running hsqldb
in Server mode. So, no more questions from my side.
