Yes, alas we still seem to have this problem. I need to go through
the configure script and see if I can do a better job of disabling
shared libraries except for platforms where we know they work for
sure.
Alas, I had hoped the new libtool and some other minor tweaks might
help in this regard. I now have access to a few Solaris 2.8 machines,
so I should be able to at least make --disable-shared the default on
this platform.
