Your configuration above looks correct to me. You don't need to define
lang_dir above if you don't use it in other definitions, though. It's
not used internally by htdig.
Is there a file called /usr/share/locale/de_DE/LC_CTYPE on your system?
If not, the de_DE locale is not complete. The LC_CTYPE file is the
one that contains the character type database, which htdig needs to
properly recognize accented characters. Even if the file is there, it
may be that the locale implementation is not working correctly on your
system. There are a LOT of systems out there where this is a problem!
You didn't mention what your system type is (i.e. which OS, and if Linux,
which distribution and which version).
The fact that accented characters are displayed in the excerpts doesn't
mean anything. Punctuation is also displayed in excerpts, but isn't
treated as a part of the words. If your locale doesn't correctly setup
the isalpha() and isalnum() functions to recognize accented letters and
umlauts as letters, then htdig treats them just like control characters
or punctuation, so they cause word breaks. The real test is to see which
words wind up in your db.wordlist file, and whether accented words are
fully highlighted.
I believe there are still problems with locale support on Slackware
Linux systems, and probably a number of other UNIX systems. See the

I never did get a followup message from Rodrigo indicating whether he had
found a solution, but you may want to try the tips I gave him.
