Hello,
I hope this is the correct group to submit to for these questions.
First the questions.
1. Is there any plan to allow ht://Dig to accomodate multiple collections,
thereby allowing
a user to search focused subgroups of data rather than an entire site?
2. Is there any plan to make "search phrases" a reality?
3. If so, when (for both questions)? If not, is there any way to make
ht://Dig mimic either
behavior?
Now the (brief) history. I just changed our Intranet server from a
commercially supported
product to ht://Dig. The reasons were many; suffice to say cost was indeed
a big factor.
The commercial product supported both #1 & #2 above, with adequate results.
The real
reason for ridding ourselves of the commercial product is that its "care and
feeding" had
gotten increasingly difficult with each new release (over about 4 years).
In addition, user
satisfaction in the results it was returning were less than stellar. In our
in-house beta test
of ht://Dig, it was viewed far more favorably than the "other" product.
(Don't ask; due to
established company policy, I can not reveal the commercial products name.
What I can
say is that it is a very well known product that has its own roots on the
internet.) However,
there are some people who feel that once you have had some feature or other,
to take that
away is to lessen the value of the service. And that comes from some of the
same folks
who griped about the less than satisfying results from the other search
tool. Go figure...
At any rate, I thought that asking these questions in an open, public forum,
would stimulate
some interesting dialog.
