I know this is heresy what I'm about to ask, but I don't see myself having
much choice.

What other free or close to free search engines are out there that provide
functionality similar to that of htdig under Linux?

I've been trying to get htdig to work for two weeks now, working on it for
several hours each night, without much to show in results. The basic
problem is that htdig gets hung up randomly on connections to the one and
only server I'm trying to index. In dozens of tries, it has never
successfully completed.

I don't blame htdig for the problem (although it could be the reason). But
I got to get something working soon and can't spend much more time on this.

So, any alternatives?
