I would argue strongly that there _must_ be an option to have ALT texts indexed. To a blind reader (or listener) the ALT text _is_ the flowing text of the document. If the author doesn't want that part of the page indexed the correct action is (isn't it?) to mark the section with <!--htdig_noindex--> rather than require that all ALT texts be ignored.
