For the case of temporary problems, you probably want to set the 
server_wait_time attribute to slow down the indexing some: 
<http://www.htdig.org/attrs.html#server_wait_time>

In the case of consistent failure, I'd make sure you can reach that 
server on the network at all. Can you bring up those URLs in a web 
browser? Can you access the server using other programs (e.g. ssh, 
ftp...)
