Brian,

Linking directly to a news article via nntp:// or news:// urls is possible, and, if
you have read access to the the news server's spool directories then you can get
htdig to index them (they're just text files, after all). But the tricky part would be
to get the Message-ID of the post which is needed to construct the URL. Also nntp://
and news:// urls -- which, except for Opera will cause a new app to launch -- might
surprise novice users who don't know about the wonderful world of newsgroups.

The second option you describe below is probably best. If mailman setup is too much
work you might look at MHonArc, another news/mailinglist to HTML archiver.

I'm setting up htdig to index our internal development site, which
includes some static pages, a twiki (wiki), and newsgroups. Indexing
the static pages and twiki should be no-brainers. I wonder if anyone
has a clever way to get the twiki to see newsgroups, though.

I was thinking of installing mailman (a mailing list server with
web-based list archives) and adding a mail<->news gateway to bridge
nntp and http, but that seems to be a very roundabout way of doing
this.
