I believe that in principal htdig will index any plain text or HTML files it has access to (other file formats are possible with the use of external parsers, which turn them into text/HTML first).
The mailman solution would probably work well. Otherwise, you need some way of making the newsgroup archives available to htdig in an indexable way. No doubt, a Perl/Python/PHP script could make this happen.
