  • Cowshit Lane: The name stays

LONDON -- When the village of Golant in southwest England decided to draw up an area map for visitors, one street stirred a little controversy: Cowshit Lane.

Some found it offensive and wanted to change it to Cowslip Lane. But local villagers voted to keep it as it is.

Mag-It machines subject to tax too

LONDON -- Fluff Ltd, maker of Mag-It vending machines, was ruled against on Thursday in its appeal to remove taxes from the maggots it sold to fishermen as bait.

Fluff tried to claim the maggots were actually animal feed and thus exempt of the broad-based sales tax of 17.5 percent. The judge said under that argument straw hats would be exempt as well.

    Pie throwers sentenced in Canada

MONTREAL -- Two men who are part of a Canadian, political protesting, pie throwing group were convicted of assault Wednesday and given six-month suspended sentences.

The pair threw pies at Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stephane Dion in May 1999. The group they belong to has targeted others in the past including actor Sylvester Stallone.

Deadly spiders, scorpions stolen in Sydney

SYDNEY -- Twenty bird-eating spiders, with venom that can kill a human, were stolen from a Sydney pet shop, police said on Tuesday. Twenty scorpions were also taken.

Police warned area residents to avoid the poisonous creatures. One inspector said, "These animals are very hard to miss as they resemble a tarantula ... with nine millimeter (0.35 inch) long fangs."
