Highway hotline gets steamy
JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri -- The Missouri state transportation department printed a toll-free hotline for information about highway projects atop their letterhead -- but they mistakenly reversed two of the numbers.
Instead of the helpful information they expected to hear, callers were greeted by the breathy voice of a phone-sex operator.

Brazillian guards determine safe distance from eggs for president
BRASILIA -- Security guards for Brazil's president spent weeks studying the distance from angry demonstrators the president would need to remain to avoid being hit by an egg.
Their findings: 150 to 180 feet (50 to 60 meters).
In recent months several top politicians have been hit by eggs thrown by angry protestors.

Police seek mugger armed with toaster
LONDON -- A 21-year-old man reported last Thursday that he was attacked by a man who threatened to hit him with a toaster.
The toaster mugger made away with $18 in cash and a gold chain.

Gumbel stumble draws conservatives' ire
NEW YORK -- Bryant Gumbel is back on conservatives' hit list for what appeared to be a profane remark about a guest on his show.
The host of CBS' "The Early Show" was interviewing Robert Knight of the Family Research Council, who backed the recent Supreme Court decision allowing the Boy Scouts to ban gays as leaders. When the interview ended Thursday, Gumbel was heard saying "What a ..." before his microphone was turned off.
Knight said he thought Gumbel ended the remark with a profanity and the word "idiot," which a videotape reportedly supports.

Sparked by Chicago, city sculptures spread like fire
LONDON -- Remember all the excitement around the Cows on Parade exhibit last year that placed colorful cows all around the streets of Chicago? Now other cities have taken a lead from the bovine sculptures.
Saginaw, Michigan has six-foot hares, New Orleans has 5-foot fish, Norfolk Virginia displays mermaids, Bloomington, Illinois grows six-foot ears of corn, St. Paul, Minnesota has five-foot dancing Snoopys, and moose stalk the streets of Toronto and Whitefish, Montana.
