Racing elephants draw crowd of 40,000 in Berlin
BERLIN -- In what was billed as Europe's first elephant race, German and
Indian jockeys "sprinted" 14 Asian and African pachyderms around the city's famous Hoppegarten racetrack.
The event drew a crowd of about 40,000. "I'm enjoying myself a lot," one spectator told Reuters television. "I thought elephants just walked around, and I was a little skeptical about how they would handle turns."

Prosecutor's party invitation blown up by judge
NORWALK, California -- A prosecutor running for county district attorney sent a talking card invitation for his fund raiser to a superior court judge. The judge, fearing it was a bomb, had it blown up.
Suspicions were raised when the judge received a larger than usual package with no return address. A metal detector showed what appeared to be a battery and wires. The sheriff's department sent arson investigators who blew up the package in the parking lot.

Judge reads opinion as poem
PHILADELPHIA -- Superior Court Judge J. Michael Eakin wrote a poem to express his decision to deny an appeal by a man who had been ordered to pay the
veterinarian bills of a miniature poodle he hit with his car.
This isn't the first time the judge has used verse in his findings. In May 1999, Eakin used the same technique in a marital dispute.

ABC unzips 'Must Pee TV' promotion
PASADENA, California -- ABC is counting on a little bathroom humor to get male viewers' attention.
The network plans to install billboards above urinals in trendy New York and Los Angeles restaurants to promote "Norm," the sitcom starring comic Norm MacDonald. They will include an audio message about the show, along with a "Must Pee TV" headline mocking NBC's familiar "Must See TV" slogan.
"Just when you think you've heard it all, we have found the perfect ad location for '`Norm,' and they're called restroom panels," ABC marketing executive Alan Cohen said this week.
