There's also gnu.regexp which works on 1.1 and up for latest versions, and even 1.0 for some of the older releases. So, still, they'd have to install the gnu.regexp package, but I, in my quite limited understanding of java, believe that's more comparable to installing a new module in perl, rather than upgrading the actual installed version of perl as I would guess would be the case moving to 1.4...
