GSoC brings together a student, a mentor, some money (most of it for the
student) and a fun framework to get things done.

It is slightly different than pure bounties.

A pure bounty is simple: you give the money, you set the objective,
whoever picks the challenge has to meet your requirement on their own
and how they do it is their business.

GSoC: Google selects mentoring organizations who recruit students.
students and or mentoring organizations set the objective (the most
interesting projects are coming from the students). Google sets a budget
of slots for each organization and the organizations rank their
projects. Those that get a slot go ahead. Students have a set time
framework to complete the work. mentors help and judge. if judgmentis
positive, Google gives most of the money to the student and a token to
the mentoring organization.

Another alternative that I've seen on the net: developer set an
objective and a price tag. people pitch in donations until the price tag
is attained.

I appreciate your generosity. If you want to be more specific about what
you'd like to see done, and about your budget, we may join forces.

hugin should receive 2500$ from Google soon. Last year we simply split
that money amongst mentors - we were all too tired to do anything else,
and as mentors have volunteered their time, they also deserve a little
compensation. this year we may discuss to use it as a bounty or as a
prize. also last year and this year i organized for a pano head
manufacturer to sponsor both students and mentors with an additional
gift. last year it was just a gift. this year we made it an "extra
bonus" for the students to integrate their code, and this is why 0.8.0
is coming along so fast.
