Hi Mac users,
I just released Imagefuser 0.4.1. See changelog of 0.4.0.2 going to 0.4.1
* Enfuse has a bug that it can't convert 16bit tiff input images to (8bit)
jpeg images (when the user requests a jpeg output image). In this case
ImageFuser will make enfuse write an intermediate 16bit tiff file and than
convert this 16bit tiff image to 8bit jpeg. The intermediate tiff is then
removed.
* ImageFuser > 0.3.2 did not check on existing files causing a "silent"
overwrite of existing images. This has been corrected.
* Changed "indeterminate" progress bar ("barber pole") to increasing
progress bar for align_image_stack steps as these step (can) take very long
and a step wise progress indicator gives more info.
* reinstated help buttons for enfuse and align_image_stack tab.
* "Align Preview" button could be checked without images loaded. It could be
unchecked with images already aligned. It wasn't unchecked when new images
were loaded.
* Expanded tiff output options from only LZW and DEFLATE to PACKBITS, NONE,
LZW and DEFLATE.
(* I updated http://wiki.panotools.org pages for enfuse and
align_image_stack.)
ImageFuser: Open Source versus Closed Source
Most users don't care at all, but here it is.
I received a (very friendly) mail from an ImageFuser user stating the
following (very condensed version):
"In previous mails you always mentioned you were very much in favor of the
Open Source community. Yet you release your ImageFuser as free software
(donation ware), but closed source. Why? (no criticism, just curiosity)."
The "previous mails" refers to a furious mail conversation in the hugin-ptx
mailing list a couple of months ago (6-10 months?, can't remember) when it
turned out that "someone" used "my" Enfuse OSX standalone binary in a
commercial product, also violating licenses. I mentioned than that "I'm
happy in the Open source Community and what it stands for" and "Yes, it's a
pity that I don't get the money, but I don't expect them to get rich of it
either so it's OK with me". The writer of that OSX "automator" plugin
switched to freeware (thanks) and corrected the license issue.
The same furious discussion started again some 2 months later (partly off
the list), when it again turned out that two other commercial packages were
available using Yuval Levy's enfuse/align_image_stack Windows binaries (1
package) and "my" OSX enfuse/align-image_stack binaries (in both packages)
and these packages were also violating licenses.
Everything than has been settled more or less satisfactorily (satisfactorily
to some, less satisfactorily to others) and everyone lived happily ever
after (and I repeated my statements mentioned above in that mail
conversation).
With regard to ImageFuser: It has always been my intention to release it as
Open Source free software (note: free software is a totally different
concept than freeware).
The fact that it is closed source right now is that I'm not ready yet and
for the time being I consider it as MY project!
I already released Imagefuser as it is as, in my opinion, it is already very
useful, even if it's not ready.
I want to build in some more functionality: full expert options for enfuse
(already struggling with that and they are a real pain in the backside,
don't know why) and (de)selecting already loaded images in a bracketed set
and some other minor things.
Next to that the application is one big waste bin of source code: it needs
structure, cleaning up of big parts of "inactivated" code (use it or not?),
lots of "debug" code (what is happening?), redundant code, and so on.
When I have reached the target I'm aiming for, hopefully version 0.5 or
maybe 0.6, it will become open source next to being free software already.
And as always:
